Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford was interested in the field of acting during her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time but Ford realized this was not the best location for her. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama which she was eventually able to get an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993 but, by that time she was already making her TV debut on a 1991 episode in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the name of her professional "Catherine Tate". During the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy, which has been added to her portfolio in 1996.
